The
Friends of Hope Clinic Lukuli
The clinic can receive support in a number of ways and the help
we have received to date has included people’s time, their
technical skills (medical and non-medical) and creating a link
to a fund provider, equipment provider or to another NGO that
wishes to use the clinic as an outreach base.
On
a separate page Coverage
we have detailed reporting of recent support and collaborative
programmes. This includes reports in the Luganda
language
We
have linked to a UK registered charity (HCLUganda) and more
information is available on this website. If you are planning
to support us financially, if funds are provided by a UK tax-payer,
we can recover additional funds through Gift Aid as the tax
nominally paid by the giver is added to that donation.
We
have recently completed the implementation of a Matching Grant
from Rotary International. This brought together the Rotary
Club of Makindye, which is close to the clinic site, and the
Cheltenham Cleeve Vale club in Gloucestershire, in the UK. The
members of these clubs donated funds, matched by Rotary International
which together amounted to over US$ 21,000; equivalent to Shs
40 million. These funds equipped the clinic during its first
year of operations and, shown in the photograph, included 1,500
Long Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets (LLIN). These mosquito
nets are being distributed free of charge by Hope Clinic Lukuli
to pregnant women, new mothers and households with young children.
Rotarian and Dr Edward Ddumba, the Director of Mulago Hospital
(left) is shown handing the nets to the co-Chair, Mrs Lubogo.
Philip Mitchell and Moses Mukasa, both active committee members
are also shown.
If you would like to help us now, please follow this link for
a standard letter to a UK bank for a Standing Order to the UK
Charity. A second form, signed and posted to the charity office
allows us to reclaim Gift Aid from the UK Government for your
donations. Thank you for taking action to help us. Letter

can remain the same but your local bank may have its own forms.

you are an online bank user.
A
big thank you to Aggreko (International in Dubai and Plc in
the UK) for linking Hope Clinic Lukuli with your staff in Kampala.
The clinic has trained a first group of 30 Aggreko staff in
HIV awareness, the correct attitudes towards prevention, reducing
stigma and counselling as well as understanding the health and
care options for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
In
addition to the training, Aggreko made a donation to the clinic
for 2005/06 which will particularly help with staffing requirements
as our patient numbers continue to grow. For 2007, the expanded
Aggreko business in Uganda has brought further staff for training
in HIV and First Aid and donation of a further Shs 10 million.
Support
has been received and is welcome in many forms: helping us to
link with and gain access to an existing programme seeking an
outreach location; links to volunteers and self-funded individuals
with professional expertise for one day, short term or longer
relationships; guidance on grant providers or offers to link
us to a group of friends looking for a safe project to support.
If you already know of a way to help us or have equipment or
funds please contact us by e-mail and we can discuss it further.

Sponsor a staff member
The main area of expenditure in the working of the clinic which
requires funding other than from the receipts from patients
is the employment costs of the medical staff. At present the
management committee are covering this cost from pledges that
have been received. However, we welcome a group or individual
who would like to ‘sponsor’ a post in the staffing
structure.
Insure
us: We have now completed the building, estimated value
in excess of GBP 25,000 excluding donations and discounts. We
also have at least $20,000 of equipment and fittings already
in place. We need to insure these and if you wanted a safe way
to support us, the premium would be fully accountable!
The staff we have include:
Clinical Officer (also called Medical Assistant) Shs 1,500,000
pm acting as Medical Manager overseeing the medical standards
(GBP 2,800/ US$5,600 for six months)
Experienced
Counsellor (HIV/AIDS and youth) Shs 500,000 pm (GBP 940/US$
1,875 for six months)
Registered Midwife or Nurse (PMTCT trained) Shs 420,000pm (GBP
790/ US$ 1,575 for six months)
Laboratory
Assistant (Malaria and HIV tests) Shs 350,000pm (GBP 650/ US$
1,300 for six months)
Enrolled Midwife or Nurse Shs 300,000pm (GBP 560/ US$ 1,125
for six months)
These amounts represent the net pay that is received by the
staff member and as the clinic grows the employment costs include
a larger payroll tax bill and contributions to state pension.
We
particularly seek support to employ a counsellor with experience
of adolescent issues covering HIV, growing up, relationships
and peer pressure.
Sponsor a ward or service
In the new premises we will also be able to offer friends the
chance to sponsor a service such as the laboratory reagents,
or the malaria test equipment or the HIV testing and counsellors.
Equipment needs
The clinic has a base level of equipment from the former management
and also donations and funds that have been provided over the
last four years. The new premises will require additional beds,
drip stands and delivery trolleys as well as advancing the equipment
we use to include sterilisers, incubators and additional sets
of hand-held equipment for deliveries and treatment of patients.
The current list of needs is extensive and funding is sought
for various elements including the maternity ward, the delivery
rooms, the paediatric/ rehydration room, counselling rooms,
youth health ward and the general consultations area. If you
would like to receive our list of needs, please contact us by
e-mail at support@hcluganda.org
